5 Steps to Creating the Perfect Family Time Capsule

Imagine opening your time capsule 10-20 years down the line and seeing how far your family has come, how much has changed and how much has stayed the same.
Here are 5 steps on how to create the perfect family time capsule:

Step 1: Decide Where You Want to Hide the Time Capsule

The first step is fairly simple; decide where you want to hide your time capsule. Do you want to hide your time capsule inside or outside? If inside, where can you put it that will be out of the way and hidden from any temptation to peak before the specified time? If you choose outside, make sure you draw a detailed map or use a marker, to remind yourself where you buried the time capsule; the last thing you will want to do is dig up half your garden if you forget. Try think of somewhere that is sentimental to you, like under your favourite picnic tree, in the roof, cellar or under a floorboard in your children’s room.

Step 2: Choose your Family Time Capsule

Next, you need to decide what kind of box you would like to put your content inside. Plastic or metal are the most durable for long storage, especially if underground. Let your family write on it with a permanent marker and be sure to include the date sealed and the date it will be opened.

Step 3: Find Appropriate Packaging

Once you have decided on the time capsule itself, you need to find packaging that will protect your capsule from time and the elements. Ensure you keep your time capsule as air and watertight as you possibly can, to prevent leakage or creepy crawlies finding a home in your box. Make sure that your box is secure as possible; wrap it in several plastic bags or even put it in a bigger metal or plastic box.

Step 4: Decide What You Want to Put Inside

This is the fun part! Encourage your whole family to get involved and share some ideas. Definitely include a family photo and a letter describing your present life (where you live, how many people are in the family, what your favourite things are to do together, your pets, etc.). Maybe get each family to write a letter about where they see themselves in 10-20 years, include a newspaper clipping on everyday grocery items, a list of your children’s likes and dislikes and bits and bobs that represent each member. Go wild, but ensure they are things that are likely to last the required time frame.

Step 5: Decide on a Time Period

This part is completely up to you. Discuss with your family how long they would like the capsule to remain unopened. The recommended time is usually around 10 years; however, if you feel you can leave it a little bit longer, that’s great! Any time under 10 years will leave the memory of the capsule still quite fresh and may not be as exciting.
